In 1983, the guided missile frigate upon which I was stationed passed through the Straits of Hormuz to begin patrolling the waters of the Persian Gulf. It was Easter Sunday, and the bloody war between Iran and Iraq dominated the headlines of the region. Lt. Ken Calhoun and I approached the Commanding Officer of our ship and asked if it would be appropriate to conduct an Easter sunrise service on the forecastle. At precisely 0600 hours (6 A.M.), the frigate headed into the wind and slowed to five knots. To our amazement, nearly one hundred men (out of a crew of 250) gathered between the five inch gun and the ASROC missile launcher in order to celebrate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. This was a day off for the crew, and we had expected a handful; but deep within the soul of every human being lies a hunger for God; and after months away from home, these men were hungry.
