This is a history of the steps taken between 1935 and 1940, to prepare the RAF for three principal but very different roles: to patrol the oceans, defend Britain against air attack, and to take the war to the enemy. The book also examines the technologies that were developed or improved during this time; 1000 horsepower engines, eight-gun fighters, long-range heavy bombs, gun turrets, radar, and many others. The Phoney War from September 1939 to May 1940, gave the RAF time in which to complete a large part of the expansion programme.
