About this product

Product Information

The US Jefferson nickel was released in 1938 as the replacement coin to the US Buffalo nickel, which experienced difficulties during its 25-year term in production. The Mint held a design competition to see who could come up with the best design to the new copper-nickel coin, requiring that it feature both President Thomas Jefferson as well as his home Monticello. Felix Schlag won the contest, and after a few change requests by the Mint a final design was approved to put into circulation. The obverse side of the 1998 five-cent piece contains a profile of Thomas Jefferson's head and bust, with the phrase "In God We Trust" written to the left and the word "Liberty" with the date of production of 1998 to the right of Jefferson's head. The reverse side of the US Jefferson nickel features his home of Monticello. The 1998 five-cent piece contains a few modifications that previous nickels do not have, including sharpened designs to both the details of Monticello and Jefferson's hair. The copper-nickel coin weighs 0.18 oz and measures 0.84 inches in diameter. The materials of the US Jefferson nickel are a combination of 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel.
