After being set up by a matchmaker, naval officer Frank Beardsley (Henry Fonda, THE GRAPES OF WRATH)--a widowed father with ten children--falls in love with Helen North (Lucille Ball, I LOVE LUCY), a naval base nurse who has eight children. They marry and the couple and their 18 children move into one house, where all manner of complications occur. The sweet and good natured movie is based on the real life experiences of Helen North Beardsley, as recounted in her book WHO GETS THE DRUMSTICK? Lucille Ball demonstrates a masterful comic turn and Henry Fonda puts in a sterling performance. The two combine to create a number of highly humorous scenes. The film's plot is reminiscent of the 1950 film CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN--which was about the trials and tribulations of a large family--and was remade in 2003, starring Steve Martin. YOURS, MINE AND OURS received the remake treatment itself in 2005 as a vehicle for Renee Russo and Dennis Quaid.
