About this product
Product Information
Includes hundreds of period photos covering all the details of the trucks, vans and trailers vital to maintain the communications of the U.S. Army in WWII. The Signal Corps was at the forefront of the technological development of communications throughout World War II. Tasked with coordinating all American military activities, the Signal Corps initially had to rely on a communications landline network covering some 1 300 000 km. This network together with radio communications provided President Roosevelt with a global overview of military operations down to battalion level updated hourly for nearly five years. Technological evolution was so rapid that radio communications soon took over from the landline network, however adaptation remained a priority within the US Army Signal Corps for when landline networks were unavailable or radio silence had to be observed; signallers also maintained older communications methods including homing pigeons.Almost every large piece of Signal Corps equipment required wheeled transport. Early in the war the Model "K" vehicles, designed for the Signal Corps' needs, quickly proliferated with 84 variants being produced. After that designation was abandoned the Signal Corps would catalogue a further 62 models of vehicles and trailers, most of them were associated with a particular radio or radar installation. This comprehensive and fully illustrated account covers radar, radio vehicles, plus specialized vehicles such as telephone repair trucks, mobile telephone switchboards and homing pigeon units, all described in technical detail and illustrated by hundreds of period photos.

Reviews
...the book is a dream to hold, be intrigued by, and riveted to until conclusion. First and foremost, the narrative in clear, clean, and, for the most part, not all that technical. In clear, precise, easy, and enjoyable to digest narration, we are privy to the World War II American and British secrets of the latest developments in radars, radios, multi-use vehicles, specialized vehicles, specialized trailers, telephones, and the like., This was a very interesting book to read and has a wealth of information about the US Army Signal Corps during WWII...Highly Recommended for beginner to advanced builders., The author has written several other books on similar vehicles so is well qualified to tackle this particular subject. He also goes into the K classifications that were peculiar to vehicles obtained for the Signal Corps. Add to it a bevy of superb period photos and you have a book that is fascinating reading on a subject that few of us really consider., ...a valuable resource whose breadth and depth of information makes it indispensable to military historians, radio and motor vehicle enthusiasts, WWII re-enactors, collectors of militaria, military model builders and technology buffs of all stripes., Offering hundreds of Signal Corps photos, many showing the vehicles deployed in action around the world, Andres includes enough details to make this book a valuable reference for anyone interested in WWII and communications history., ...a worthy addition to any personal library; whether it belongs to an historian, a vehicle restorer, or a builder of military miniatures., Interspersed throughout the book are tables which detail the systems used and individual specifications. The hundreds of period photos are all very clear and have reproduced very nicely in this book
