Il volume, risultato della ricerca condotta dello studioso di origini australiane Andrew Hopkins, restituisce la figura e l'opera dell'architetto e scultore veneziano Baldassarre Longhena. Allievo di Scamozzi, di cui completò le Procuratie Nuove in piazza San Marco a Venezia, Longhena con la sua opera segna profondamente il carattere della Venezia del Seicento. Oltre alla chiesa di Santa Maria della Salute, sua opera più rappresentativa e nota, progettò, sempre per la città lagunare, le chiese degli Scalzi e dell'Ospedaletto, le facciate per la Scuola dei Carmini, lo scalone di San Giorno Maggiore, e tra gli edifici civili, Ca' Pesaro e Ca' Rezzonico, entrambi su Canal Grande. Il volume ripercorre la vita e l'opera architettonica e scultorea dell'architetto restituendone, attraverso un ricco apparato fotografico, le grandi qualità di inventore e scenografo attento all'uso plastico della materia e della luce.
