The "adapter" must be used for this plug to be on the correct polarity. Why it isn't assembled "correctly" to start with is unknown. The male end (outside edge, negative terminal) also does not flex much at all and requires significant force to insert and MORE force to remove (I needed pliers) from a genuine BMW / Powerlet socket. The seller did quickly respond(offered a discount) but has since been AWOL
