I contacted the seller; they refused a return because I’d tried to be a good sport and fix it, and offered nothing to make it right. While I did get the tape deck to function with new belt, it is missing a spring on the tensioner supply reel gear so playback is still dysfunctional. I’m unhappy there wasn’t more accountability for the misleading listing.
