I think they slightly over-estimated the condition, as they described one hinge as being "loose" without affecting function, when in fact it was completely floppy with no tension at all. This could make it very awkward to use the binoculars, but after some searching and a bit of trial and error I discovered that it could be easily fixed by adjusting a hidden screw. So all was well.
