Synopsis
This guidebook describes 25 hut-to-hut treks in the Dolomites of northern Italy, covering 15 regions including Cortina, Sella, Sesto, Marmolada and Latemar. Ranging from 11.3km to 40.8km and from two to four days, the graded routes are suitable for walkers with a reasonable level of fitness and experience of mountain terrain, and some feature exposed sections which demand a good head for heights. This edition includes a number of treks in less frequently visited rugged districts, as well as the more popular trips, all of which take advantage of the region's network of mountain refuges and efficient public transport system, with the majority of routes accessible by public bus. Detailed route description is presented alongside mapping and stunning colour photography and the guide also suggests alternative access and exit routes, and options for linking routes to create a longer trek. There is plenty of advice to help make the most of a trip as well as background information on the region's geology, plants and wildlife and local cuisine. The Dolomites - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - are characterised by striking volcanic and sedimentary rock formations. Walking is an ideal way to discover this breathtaking landscape of angular peaks, towering pinnacles and jagged ridges, and the carefully chosen routes in this guide will exhilarate, challenge and inspire., Guidebook to 25 multi day walks in the Dolomites mountains of northeast of Italy. The walks are mostly circular and 2 to 4 days long, and take in the Marmarole, Marmolada, Civet, Sella and Cortina Dolomites among others. Includes notes on accommodation, wildlife, transport, equipment, a glossary and other practical information., The Dolomites offer breathtaking alpine scenery among mountains flanked by well-graded paths and excellent mountain refuges that verge on hotels. The region is easily accessible by means of a fine network of public transport from major towns and travel hubs, such as Venice, Verona, Munich and Innsbruck. Walkers in the Dolomites will find themselves traversing an extraordinary array of landscapes. There are high-altitude lunar-like plateaux where people are dwarfed by soaring peaks, elegant rock spires and breathtaking sheer walls. A slightly lower level means dense evergreen, deciduous forests and sweet alpine meadows. The 28 multi-day routes cover everything from a stroll through woods and meadows to family routes, steep rocky zigzag passages and hands-on clambers. The itineraries presented in this guidebook have been designed to introduce walkers to each of the main Dolomite groups, their unique formations and landscapes. The majority are rewarding ring routes or extended traverses linking different valleys in a journey through cultures and history, not to mention nature. A couple of days at a time are spent traversing the high reaches, with overnight stays in excellent huts. Walkers thus have the opportunity to immerse themselves in this unique atmosphere. Where relevant, there is cross-referencing to enable walkers to vary or link up more itineraries, not to mention alternative exit or access routes. On the other hand, shorter sections can be cut off for day walks where a return to base is desired. The walks described in this guidebook have been graded for overall difficulty and range from Grade 1 which refers to clear tracks and paths over straightforward terrain, all of which are suitable for beginners, to Grade 3 which refers to strenuous steep climbs with possible exposed stretches and descents involved.
