En 1737 parut a Paris un ouvrage intitule "Essai sur le jeu des echecs" dont l'auteur etait un certain Philippe Stamma, natif d'Alep en Syrie. Le livre rencontra immediatement le succes aupres des joueurs d'echecs de l'epoque et fut traduit dans les principales langues d'Europe, notamment en anglais et en allemand. Il fit l'objet de nombreuses reeditions durant un siecle. Le grand Philidor s'inspira tres certainement de cet ouvrage lors de la redaction de sa celebre "Analyse des echecs" publiee en 1749. Toujours actuelles et tres plaisantes, ces cent fins de parties, adaptees en francais contemporain, feront le bonheur aussi bien de l'amateur que de l'historien du jeu d'echecs."
