About this product

Product Information

Trevor Huddleston was born in 1913, and as a young man, was greatly influenced by the efforts of the Christian Socialist movement to combat poverty in London's slums, and to awaken the consciences of the rich. In 1937, after reading history at Oxford, he became a priest, then joined the Community of the Resurrection. In 1941 he took monastic vows, and two years later took charge of the Community's mission in Sophiatown, Johannesburg. He was appointed Provincial of the Order in 1949. The accession to power of the Nationalist Party in South Africa involved Huddleston in confrontation and protest against apartheid. In 1956 he returned to Britain, where his powerful indictment of apartheid policies, Naught for Your Comfort, was published. In 1960 he was consecrated Bishop of Masasi, a post he held until 1968, when he became Suffragan Bishop of Stepney. Finally, he was appointed Bishop of Mauritius and Archbishop of the Indian Ocean before retiring in 1983. Since 1981 he has been President of the Anti-Apartheid Movement, and for the past five years he has also been Chairman of the International Defence and Aid Fund for Southern Africa. This collection of essays by friends, colleagues and associates is offered to Bishop Trevor Huddleston as a celebration of his 75th birthday. The distinguished list of contributors have gathered to pay tribute to a remarkable life spent at the forefront of the battle against poverty and racial injustice.
