It has two solder contacts for stay-alive add-ons, unlike those decoders which are completely encapsulated in plastic. For the same reason, they must be isolated from any other parts of the engine which might cause a short circuit. It is probably too large for most N scale engines, and has too low a current limit (1.2 amp) for most S and larger scale engines.
