You have to press the snooze button to get it to light up, but it is very readable. The amazing thing is that it sets time for itself. It arrived showing the right time, day, month, and year. All I had to do was set the time zone. It came set to Pacific Time, and I had to change it to Eastern Time. It has a button battery built in, but I had to add two replaceable AAA batteries. I have not yet figured out how to get to the button battery.
