Coin collectors may show interest in this 2001 one-cent piece, which is a copper-plated zinc coin. This circulating US cent has a design that commemorates two dates related to President Abraham Lincoln’s birth. On the obverse side is a portrait of Lincoln; the reverse side of the 2001 US cent displays an image of the Lincoln Memorial. The obverse of this US cent was designed in 1909 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Lincoln’s birth and is a creation of the artist Victor David Brenner. The reverse side of the coin was created by designer Frank Gasparro while he worked at the US Mint in 1959, the year of the sesquicentennial commemoration of Lincoln’s birth. The 2001 one-cent piece is one of many issuances that share the same design resulting from celebrating the same date 50 years apart. This coin is called the Lincoln cent or Lincoln penny and is desirable for a collector who focuses on US coins. Struck as a copper-plated zinc coin that weighs 2.5 g (0.09 oz), has a 19.05-mm (0.75-inch) diameter, and is 1.55-mm (0.06-inch) thick, the coin is composed of 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5 percent copper.
