Reviews
"We've needed a book like this for years, and this one delivers. dng S Hng, an accomplished MiG pilot, gives us a fresh, challenging take on air combat from the North Vietnamese perspective. Bringing new Vietnamese and Russian sources to English readers for the first time, this work is sure to provoke discussion, but it's a must-read for anyone studying the Vietnam War." --Michael W. Hankins, curator, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and author of Flying Camelot "dng S Hng presents a thoughtful and authoritative analysis of airpower in the Vietnam War from a North Vietnamese perspective. This unique study from "the other side of the hill," which combines technological sophistication with an understanding of the strategic context, adds new insight into the conduct of the Vietnam War and its downstream effects on contemporary air operations. Combat in the Sky is a must-read for anyone interested in the many dimensions of airpower." --Professor John Andreas Olsen, Colonel, Royal Norwegian Air Force, "We've needed a book like this for years, and this one delivers. dng S Hng, an accomplished MiG pilot, gives us a fresh, challenging take on air combat from the North Vietnamese perspective. Combat in the Sky is essential reading for those piecing together the clashes between the MiGs and their American adversaries."-- Michael E. Synopsis
Fought in the skies over North Vietnam, the air war between Vietnamese People's Air Force (VNPAF) and US airpower lasted nearly eight years with hundreds of thousands of combat missions carried out and nearly four hundred dogfights. This is the English edition of the definitive North Vietnamese work on Vietnam War airpower., Fought in the skies over North Vietnam, the air war between Vietnamese People's Air Force (VNPAF) and U.S. airpower lasted nearly eight years with hundreds of thousands of combat missions carried out and nearly four hundred dogfights. Combat in the Sky: Airpower and the Defense of North Vietnam, 1965-1973 is the English edition of the definitive North Vietnamese work on Vietnam War airpower. In this book, dng S Hng depicts the relevant events in chronological order from the first air battles such as the one at Dragon's Jaw Bridge (April 1965), to the Linebacker II Campaign--or as it was known by the North Vietnamese--the "din Biên Ph in the Air Campaign" (December 1972). Dong then writes about the signing of the Paris Peace Accords (January 1973), and the VNPAF's attacks on T'n Sn Nht Airfield (April 1975). The air war in Vietnam was the first modern conflict in which the two opposing sides used jet combat aircraft equipped with air-to-air missiles. In addition to his analysis of the strategic calculations, especially by the North Vietnamese, and the operations carried out, the author also details the technical characteristics of the weaponry used, as well as the changes in tactics applied in each phase of the war. In doing so, Dong provides the most unique perspective of this aspect of the conflict available in the English language.
