The valves are smooth. The tuning slide needs some. Unlike a traditional trombone that screws together, the valve section slides into the bell section and then is tightened with a thumb screw. It allows the bell section to move away from the valve section while playing. The mouthpiece is a bit small and shallow and does not sound good on lower notes. Fixed that using a 12c.
