This reference grammar and workbook combined is designed to consolidate and extend the productive range of the student. The book concentrates on tenses and verb forms, modals, word order and the important area of links (conjunctions) and the part they play in the construction of meaningful sentences. There is a section on phrasal verbs and the opportunity for extensive practice in the use of dependent prepositions. Relative phrases, shortened constructions expressing purpose, linking for time and reported speech are all dealt with fully, and the English tense system and the passive have been approached afresh. Wherever possible, grammar is treated in context , ie at text rather that sentence level. All explanations are illustrated by examples and accompanied by exercises. At the back of the book there are study lists, word and subject indexes, and a comprehensive answer key, making it accessible for both classroom and self-study use. The new edition incorporates a more comprehensive focus on style, as well as many refinements to explanations, examples, exercises and study lists.
