Notes
Nao Brazil is a collection of '80s-era Brazilian new wave/post punk - synth experiments from São Paulo goths. The main difference between Western acts (who put a lot of energy into keeping fierce and conjuring up gloom) and their Brazilian counterparts is that in Brazil, the kids didn't necessarily share that agenda. With the best of these artists, it seems like the template crossed the ocean as nothing more than a stylish, compelling sound- something that could just as easily be approached with a lot more joy and warmth. Some of the featured artists include Mercenarias, an all girl group with attitude that could be compared to the Slits, Au Pairs or Liliput. Other bands such as Chance and Fellini flirted with the samba rhythm in a low tech style that recalls early Cabaret Voltaire. Man Records. 2005.
