Opening up the unit I aligned the plates to allow the rod to go thru. After trying to use the clamps for my ladder, I couldn't get enough clamping force to secure the ladder because of the inferior design. While driving the ladder almost fell off my truck. An Irwin wood clamp would do a better job. Not safe.
