Synopsis
While medieval military life is sometimes pictured in terms of knights in armour with splendid coats of arms, the reality more often consisted of men struggling against cold and damp and against elusive foes who refused to do battle. In this book, Michael Prestwich re-creates the experience of medieval warfare, examining how English medieval armies fought, how men of all ranks of society were recruited, how the troops were fed, supplied and deployed, what new weapons were developed, and what structure was set in place for military command., Challenging many common assumptions about the glamour of medieval warfare, this highly readable history recreates the real war experience of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century England. Filled with anecdotes and illustrations, it examines how English medieval armies fought, how men were recruited, how the troops were fed, supplied, and deployed, what new weapons were developed, and what structure was set in place for military command., The real-war experience of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries are examined and traditional assumptions are challenged. Prestwich discusses how medieval soldiers were recruited, commanded and supplied as well as strategy and tactics. Chapters include: infantry, mercenaries, chivalry, the navy, siege warfare and the nature of the battle.
