Mary Tudor, Queen Mary 1 of England, in 1553 became known as "Bloody Mary," for her extreme cruelty and willingness to execute people. In modern times, women such as Madame Mao of China (1914-1991) the wife of Mao Tse-tung, who it is believed was the driving force behind the Chinese Cultural Revolution, of which she was the Deputy Director. During this 10-year period, intellectuals were imprisoned and many Eastern and Western sources have estimated the death toll from 1966-1969 alone to be around 500,000. Leaders such as Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher, and the United States Secretary of State Hilary Clinton are all equally as ruthless as their male counterparts. A grave misconception is that female serial killers are rare creatures, that they are not very common, a myth perpetuated by both the press and popular media. Women Serial Killers are not a phenomenon unique to the late twentieth century, nor are they exclusive to America.
