I'm going to add a length of this lead strip over the joint ensuring it makes solid contact with the glass then paint over; hopefully it will deflect the water from the joint; at the cost of the lead it's worth trying?

The lead comes with an applicator tool which enabled me, a complete novice, to achieve a convincing, realistic effect. A word of warning, make sure you are ordering enough to complete the piece, I underestimated how much I needed and ended up running out, then having to order more, having to await its delivery with a half finished job! Frustrating!
