    Reviews
...the author is to be commended for producing a bibliography of the Shawnee Indians that should prove a valuable reference tool..., Students of Shawnee history owe a debt of gratitude to Randolph Noe. This meticulously annotated bibliography offers not only a thorough survey of the published materials on the Shawnee, but also a guide to primary sources that is truly invaluable. In scope the entries, 2,779 in number organized in thirteen chapters, range from the precontact period to the present. The annotations are succinct but always useful, as is the historical introduction. This book belongs on the shelf of every serious student of the Shawnee, and in every collection of reference materials on American Indians., ...meticulously researched...the scope of the book is nothing short of impressive. Though a reference work, its painstaking meticulousness exudes a love of subject, and it is clear that Noe thoroughly enjoyed putting this impressive book together...annotations are strongly written, informative, and objective...indispensable work., ...excellent bibliography...Nearly all the pertinent items are here, along with many little-known articles and dissertations, and most scholars will make discoveries among these gleanings...this conscientious, wide-ranging, and valuable volume is a mandatory first stop for any student of the Shawnee., Randolph Noe has given scholars of the complex and obscure history of the Shawnee a gift unlikely ever to be improved upon in this addition to the useful Scarecrow Press series of Native American bibliographies., A lifetime's labor of love. Using Noe's bibliography as a map, we are introduced to one treasure after another. A fine book, too good to leave to libraries., ...this bibliography broadly surveys the history and culture of a tribe that has been largely fragmented throughout most of its existence. Recommended for libraries supporting research in Native American studies and US History.

    Synopsis
The result of years of painstaking research, this outstanding compilation reflects the wealth of material available on the Shawnee, from contact through the 20th century. The historical introduction provides a succinct but comprehensive narrative of Shawnee history. The bibliography itself is arranged in three broad subject areas. The first covers general history and affairs, anthropology, and linguistics; the second moves through history with the Shawnee, providing easy access to materials that document and analyze each period of their history; and the third references a plethora of primary documents-judicial, administrative, and Congressional material not generally found in existing guides. This latter section lends a particular strength to the work with its annotations of the Annual Reports of the Commissioners of Indian Affairs, which give unparalleled views of Shawnee life in the 19th century. Although intended primarily as a guide to the literature, the entries are generous in scope and description and often contain quotations from the primary sources. Intended for historians, anthropologists, researchers, and students, both graduate and undergraduate.
