Synopsis
Early Mormonism badly needed ¿a few good men¿ who could handle dangerous, physically strenuous, confrontational, or volatile situations. Husky John Lowe Butler was one of a score of this type who helped the Church. In the face of persecution and ridicule, John and wife Caroline converted to Mormonism in 1835. They moved from Kentucky to join the Saints in Missouri, where John became one of a handful of loyal, rough-and-ready men trusted by Church leaders with difficult frontier assignments. He came to the defense of the Saints against a Missouri mob at Gallatin and witnessed the fall of Far West. As an ordained bodyguard of Joseph Smith, he rode with a posse on the trail of the Prophet¿s kidnappers and was with him during the final days of his life. John filled four missions to the plains Indians and wintered in vanguard camps of the Mormon exodus. He died while serving as a pioneer bishop in Spanish Fork, Utah, after having ¿done my best to help roll forth the Kingdom of God.¿
