About this product
Product Information
The story of Chicago gangsters in the 1920s is legendary. Less talked about is the tale of the politicians who allowed those gangsters to thrive. During the heyday of organized crime in the Prohibition era, Chicago mayor "Big Bill" Thompson and Gov. Len Small were the two most powerful political figures in Illinois. Thompson campaigned on making Chicago "a wide open town" for bootleggers. Small sold thousands of pardons and paroles to criminals, embezzled $1 million, and was then acquitted after mobsters bribed the jury. This book is the story of those Jazz Age politicians whose careers in government thrived on and endorsed corruption and racketeering, from Chicago to Springfield. It complements author Jim Ridings's groundbreaking biography, Len Small: Governors and Gangsters, which was praised by critics and situated Ridings as a trailblazer among Chicago crime authors.

- e***l (55)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseThree-day rocket-fast shipping. The maps were packed well, and indeed are from 1957, just as described. A fair price and a great deal all-around. Seller is responsive and ships fast. I'll buy here again in a hot minute!
- i***s (272)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseItem arrived solo just now & was packaged appropriately for shipping. I ordered 3 items from the seller who said all 3 were put in the same box. For some unknown reason, the eBay agent I contacted had no idea why the International hub opened the original box & split the shipments to send all 3 items separately. The item appearance was as described & was in good condition. The seller was very generous in adjusting the shipping cost despite there being no "save on combined shipping". Thx!šGreen Bay Packers & Chevrolet Knit Headband - Unisex Winter Accessory (#256608636957)
