They have a separate volume control for audio and a separate switch and level for the external mic, so you can hear a conversation normally without removing the muffs or shouting. This is great where you need to hear people or instruction, but can be turned off to save power when operating machinery. The music quality is quite ok, except perhaps the amplification is a little low, as I am a little deaf.
