About this product

Product Information

The importance of Iona rests on the arrival there of St Columba in 563 and his establishment of a monastery from where he launched a mission to the people of Scotland and Northern England. This mission was deeply rooted in a faith which gave rise to some of the most spectactular flowering of the Celtic peoples. This is perhaps best expressed in the Book of Kells, which was made on the island before being taken to Ireland when the Viking raids virtually destroyed the young Christian culture. This is a full colour tribute to the Isle of Iona and its sacred story. Illustrated with photographs, drawings, maps, diagrams and watercolours, it covers the many facets of the island's story including the history and the people both past and present, surrounding area, the wildlife and even touches on the geology.
