About this product
Product Information
Best known for Steve McCurry’s iconic photograph of an Afghan teenager displayed on the cover, the June 1985 issue of National Geographic can be a collector’s item. The front cover of any magazine is powerful, and this one can be no exception. There are several other interesting feature stories in this issue including the U.S.-Mexico border, the war on the Afghan frontier, the Great Salt Lake, and the Cayman Islands. Steve McCurry, a well known photographer, took the picture that was to be on the cover while he was in Pakistan to take photographs of the plight of the people at a refugee camp. Surprisingly, National Geographic’s picture editor didn’t want to put the picture on the cover, as it was too disturbing. Disturbing, one must suppose, because this girl’s eyes in the photos are an intense green and many have commented they are “haunting and haunted.” Finally, the editor relented and published the image on the front page of National Geographic in June 1985. The intense green eyes of the girl captivated the world and the cover became an icon for the magazine. The girl that McCurry photographed back in 1984 did not report her name, and thereafter, known only as the “Afghan girl.” The story of the photo is fascinating and has never ceased to cause interest even after all these years. So much so that in 2002, Steve McCurry joined a crew from National Geographic Television & Film to search for and check on the Afghan girl from the photo and found her. Her name is Sharbat Gula. After all these years, the Afghan girl, Gula, is living a relatively normal life in Afghanistan; she is a wife and a mother, she is religious and prays every day, and Gula wishes for a better life for her children. Because of the ongoing war in Afghanistan, Gula’s story from National Geographic magazine is still intriguing to many around the world. McCurry said that he receives letters consistently asking of Sharbat Gula’s situation and how they can help her in her post. In this particular issue of National Geographic are other feature stories of the times that can still be, surprisingly, relevant today. Issues at the U.S.-Mexican border, war on the Afghan frontier, a story of the Great Salt Lake and its fishless fishing season, and the fair skies of the Cayman Islands. In publication since 1888, National Geographic exists to inspire people to care for the planet. Each magazine issue of the National Geographic Society addresses concerns related to geography, archaeology, and natural science as well as environmental and historical conservationism. This particular issue of National Geographic from June 1985 with the cover photo of the Afghan girl can add value to any collection.

- u***k (905)- Feedback left by buyer.More than a year agoVerified purchaseGreat communication, fast shipping, Good Seller. Only downside was the shoes appear to have been a store return due to a slightly improper fit. The right shoe is narrow compared to the left, might explain the X-marked size tags. The X-marks on tags and narrower shoe fit was not Id'd in the listing. I've used the shoes 2x on trail and they work great for riding, just can't walk around in them for any length of time. Guess I know what to ask about next time.Size 11.5 - adidas Five Ten Freerider Pro Gray (#235274003988)
