Desert in my Backyard - One Woman's Journey into Silence is the inspirational story of a challenging, ongoing decision to seek quiet space and silence for prayer, meditation and spiritual reflection. Catherine House, a little "desert", was built in 1981 on the back of ten acres where author Jeanne Lound Schaller lives near Midland, Michigan. A labyrinth and a Glade of Forgiveness also rest in this sanctuary, surrounded by the lush beauty of Mother Nature.The story shares Jeanne's guest book entries and those of hundreds of others, both youth and adults, who have visited Catherine House for a few minutes, hours or days. Also included are her poems that speak of her decades-long journey into inner silence that resulted in her help to initiate organizations that have supported peace and social justice, to working as a mediator, plus teaching conflict resolution skills to students and adults. She has helped to build peace locally as Chair of the Midland Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) Chapter, and globally through her connection with NP, the international NGO which was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016. Also included is her experience, at the age of 68, as a Rotary International Peace Fellow in Bangkok, Thailand and why she believes that "Peace is Humanity's New Art."
