Turns out after some fantastic customer service from George at deercreekaudio that my receiver was not working correctly. I returned it because my Bose EQ works but if it ever goes bad, I will reorder from Deer Creek Audio. I cannot say enough about how helpful they were. He took about 25 minutes of his time to walk me through different scenarios of trouble shooting.

I moved the jumpers to the 20mV position, which helped (tape loop hookup) but the equalization reminds me of the old days when you turned on the Dolby NR on a tape deck. Now remember, this is to my 61 year old ears. Your experience may be different. I can play with the filters/loudness on the receiver to dial in better sound, just not quite to my ears as good as the Bose EQ
