I am just starting out in judo, and the thicker jacket seems to help absorb some of the impact of getting slammed into the mat, helping to protect the ribs and inner organs. I wear the thinner gis sometimes and it seems more painful to be thrown compared to wearing a thicker jacket. This could be in my imagination. I am 6'0"/180, sz. 6 fits well.

I washed the gi in cold water and it still shrank a small bit, not too much. I am about 6'0" and weigh around 175-180 and the gi fits perfectly. There isn't too much room though, and I have only washed it once (cold water) and hang dried it. The pants shrank about an inch in length at first wash. I am thinking if your are borderline 180, maybe best to go size up to 6/200.
