Synopsis
The Douglas A-3 Skywarrior, though something of a cult favourite, remains a largely unremarked classic of Naval Aviation. Built for nuclear weapon delivery, the A-3 made its name in Vietnam as a conventional bomber, tanker and Electronic Warfare platform. It was the largest aircraft ever regularly operated from the decks of aircraft carriers, earning it the fleet-wide nickname 'Whale'. It excelled in every mission area assigned to it and operated in the US Navy for more than four decades, from 1956 through to 1991. Fully illustrated to depict the incredible array of paint schemes and awesome size, this volume focuses on the type's Vietnam service, which saw the aircraft briefly used as a bomber over both North and South Vietnam from March 1965, before the Skywarrior proved far more valuable as a multi-role tanker (KA-3B) and tanker/tactical jammer (EKA-3B). The title includes details on all of these operations as well as more clandestine reconnaissance missions, and provides information about the men that flew them., An illustrated history of the biggest and heaviest aircraft to be routinely operated from carrier flightdecks, performing all manner of frontline and support tasks for naval aircraft flying from land bases and vessels in the Tonkin Gulf., The Douglas A-3 Skywarrior is one of the most unique, versatile and striking aircraft in the history of Naval Aviation, excelling in every mission area assigned to it. It was the largest aircraft ever to operate regularly from the flightdeck of an aircraft carrier, earning it the fleet-wide nickname 'Whale'. Built for nuclear weapon delivery, the A-3 actually forged its reputation in Vietnam as a conventional bomber, tanker and Electronic Warfare platform. Highly modified versions such as the EKA-3B, RA-3B and EA-3B also developed an excellent record in specialist roles such as intelligence and photo-reconnaissance. Drawing on, rare photographs and first-hand accounts from the men who flew the jet, this study charts the A-3's sterling and varied service in Vietnam,, from the early combat missions to the stealthy reconnaissance and data-gathering assignments later in the war. It explains how this large and powerful aircraft and its crews were able to adapt to so many different tasks and why it was deemed good enough to remain in service with the US Navy for more than four decades. Osprey Combat Aircraft Series, Comprehensive histories of fighting aircraft and their crews, highlighting their vital role in the development of warfare in the 20th and 21st centuries, A unique source of information, researched by recognised experts and brought to life by first-hand accounts from the combat veterans themselves, Concise, authoritative text is supported by at least 30 original colour artworks, specially commissioned scale drawings, and the best archival photography from around the world Book jacket.
