In 1931, in the teeth of the Great Depression, the Nevada legislature made a daring move and created two legalised industries: gambling and the six week divorce. By the 1940s, "I'm going to Reno!" became synonymous with divorce and divorce seekers came running by the thousands. If you had the money and the need for privacy, you stayed at one of the dude ranches where the clientele was upscale. Award-winning author William L. McGee worked as the head dude wrangler on the exclusive Flying M.E. dude ranch, 20 miles south of Reno. The Flying M.E. catered to the wealthy with names like Astor, du Pont, and Roosevelt. McGee recounts his years on the ranch from 1947 to 1949 and provides an up-close glimpse into the lives and stories of the guests he met., In 1931, in the teeth of the Great Depression, the Nevada legislature made a daring move and created two legalised industries: gambling and the six week divorce.
