The grey plastic part faces vehicle interior, but it mates with a black plastic bracket under the headliner. I ordered it because the little black hanger tabs were not broken. I eventually found out that everything mounts more securely when you use two screws in the place for those screws, but it still was nice to have the hanger tabs intact.
