Reviews
"The writing style of The Raven and the Loon is straightforward. The authors use short but well-chosen sentences to tell the humorous tale. This picture book, in particular, is one that will be enjoyed as a read-aloud. The illustrations by Kim Smith are dynamic; there is a constant feeling of movement guiding the reader from page to page. The colour palette is very simple, and this works very well with the text. It is comprised very basically of white, black and blue, with only a very spare use of earth tones throughout which adds to the clean and sharp feel of the images... The Raven and the Loon is a delightful fable that entertains the reader and pushes one to think about questions of fate, of chance, and of becoming. Recommended. " -- CM Magazine "The simple words and exuberant tone will make it easy for younger listeners to follow the narrative, yet the story and characters are complex enough that the book should appeal to school-aged children as well. Kim Smith's playful, eye-catching illustrations add a dramatic element to the story, bringing the characters to life and reinforcing the action with visual cues. In addition to being an entertaining story, The Raven and the Loon is full of valuable messages. Children will learn the importance of being patient, taking pride in their work, exhibiting good manners, and managing their emotions. With its significant potential for generating discussion, this is a perfect book for school and library settings." -- Quill & Quire

Synopsis
One day Raven and Loon play a sewing game that would give their feathers some much-needed colour, leading to the birds acquiring their now-familiar coats., In the time before animals were as they are today, Raven and Loon were both white. Their feathers had no colour at all. Raven spent his days swooping through the sky trying to fight off his incessant boredom, while loon spent her days in her iglu working away on her sewing. One day, too bored to even fly, Raven visited Loon and suggested a sewing game that would give their feathers some much-needed colour. The results - not at all what the two birds expected - led to Raven and Loon acquiring their now-familiar coats. This whimsical retelling of a pan-Arctic traditional story features lively, colourful illustrations from Kim Smith.
