About this product
Product Information
Thai Prince Chatrichalerm Yukol himself directed this saga of 16th century Thailand, which plunges deep into the era's royal court intrigue and bloody battles with neighboring Burma. The plot centers around two women: The noble and beautiful Princess Suriyothai (M.L. Piyapas Bhirombhakdi), who sacrifices her own true love (and eventually, her life) for the good of the country, and Srisudachan (Mai Charoenpura) a scheming lady of the court who plots to seize the throne. Laden with exquisite scenery and decor, this film is truly epic in scope, employing thousands of extras, and hundreds of painted elephants and horses. It also offers enough treachery, beheading, assassinations, bloody battles, seductions, and betrayals for several Shakespeare plays. Despite the plethora of historical fact on display, however, the painterly lighting and textures, fantastic period costumes and ornate pageantry elevate this undertaking far past mere historical drama and into the realm of cinematic history itself. Free of digital effects, and nonetheless a spectacle writ very large, it is comparable with the early, silent epics of D.W. Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille. Prince Chatrichalerm's old UCLA film school pal, Francis Ford Coppola, served as an executive producer on the film. He also worked on editing it down from well over three hours to its present running length.

- o***5 (371)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseA&E in the 1990s set the standard for American non-fiction programming with shows like American Justice, Cold Case Files, The Real West, Civil War Journal, and Ancient Mysteries, and not only has no one managed to reach that level again but the quality is moving in the opposite direction with ever increasing speed. American Revolution is comfortably in the top tier of documentary storytelling alongside A&E's timeless classics, with Bill Kurtis—the best storyteller of all—driving the narration.
