Additional information
Personnel: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Tommy Flanagan (conductor, piano); Frank De La Rosa (bass); Ed Thigpen (drums). Reissue producers: Bodo Jacoby, Jorg Eipasch. Recorded live at the Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco, California in October 1968. Includes liner notes by Norman Granz and Kurt Weil. Yes, the title refers to the Cream song. If the idea of Ella Fitzgerald covering a Jack Bruce-Peter Brown classic unnerves you in any way, perhaps it's best to steer clear of this album, before you learn of her version of "Hey Jude." But the results are nowhere near as dire as most pop crossover albums by jazz artists. For one thing, Ella Fitzgerald is the consummate jazz singer, one who could sing the phone book with conviction, humor and grace. More importantly, she's a true professional who recognizes that a good song is a good song, and so she doesn't treat the rock material with the condescending disrespect a lot of her contemporaries brought to similar albums. The results are surprisingly wonderful. Besides the two tracks mentioned above, Fitzgerald works wonders with "Alright, Okay, You Win," "Useless Landscape," and even the Doors' fairly dire "Love Her Madly."
