Niet afgebeeld. 1908 edition. Uittreksel: ...gezien zijn en ik geef hierop bevel de tent op te slaan en in alle richtingen naar olifanten te zoeken. Het bericht van den Capitaoen mijn besluit om hier te blijven, is iedereen welkom, vooral aan de dragers, die 24 dagen achtereen hard hebben gewerkt en in dien tijd 326% mijlen hebben afgelegd. Ten einde op alles voorbereid te zijn, bestel ik dadelijk mijn lunch en ga rustig zitten lezen. Om 12 uur komt een man in het kamp, die beweert, dat hij vier olifanten heeft gezien. Ik ga er dadelijk op af en trek door het bosch naar den overkant van het eiland, waar wij een half uur later aankomen. Na 45 minuten te hebben geloopen, ontmoeten wij een anderen man, die ons het spoor der olifanten wijst. Dit is geenszins versch, maar wij volgen het toch gedurende een uur enkomen dicht bij een klein dorp dat ongeveer op 4 mijlen van Kawamba ligt. Wij rusten hier een oogenblik en zien dat heden morgen een olifant door een der tuinen heeft geloopen. Nu nemen wij dit spoor op en volgen het gedurende een uur, maar de olifant is over de vlakte heen naar het volgende eiland geloopen en wij willen juist de achtervolging opgeven en naar het kamp terugkeeren, als wij om3uur een versch spoor vinden. Wij volgen dit nu, hetgeen aanvankelijk over het afgebrande gras gemakkelijk gaat maar wij komen langzamerhand in een gedeelte, dat zeer dicht begroeid is en waar wij zeer langzaam vorderen. De mannen nemen om beurten de leiding; het is zwaar werk, de wind is ons ongunstig en ik merk aan alles, dat de olifant ons geroken heeft en voor ons uit loopt. Wij gaan toch door, het loopen wordt gemakkelijker en wij zetten er een goeden gang in. De olifant kan niet ver zijn, wij houden telkens halt om te luisteren en zien intusschen evenals gisteren eene groote kudde elanden.
