Although largely gone, cabooses remain icons, For more than a century, virtually every freight train in North America was trailed by a caboose. From their beginnings as mid-1800s "conductor's cars" converted from boxcars, cabooses evolved to become specialized pieces of rolling stock with cupolas or bay windows. Cabooses not only allowed the conductor and brakeman to observe their trains and monitor the brake pressure- they also served as sleeping quarters, offices, and rolling repositories for tools and equipment.
