Synopsis
Although largely gone, cabooses remain icons, For more than a century, virtually every freight train in North America was trailed by a caboose. From their beginnings as mid-1800s "conductor's cars" converted from boxcars, cabooses evolved to become specialized pieces of rolling stock with cupolas or bay windows. Cabooses not only allowed the conductor and brakeman to observe their trains and monitor the brake pressure- they also served as sleeping quarters, offices, and rolling repositories for tools and equipment. In Guide to North American Cabooses, Carl Byron and Don Heimburger explore the history and evolution of the caboose, with a wealth of photos that show cars of more than 100 railroads and owners. The images and descriptions trace improvements and changes, from wood cars to steel, and finally to the last days of mainline caboose operations in the 1980s. Variations, such as transfer cabooses, drover cars, and test cars, are also covered. You'll also see how caboose operations evolved, from the days of cabooses assigned to specific conductors to today's modified shoving platforms. Book jacket., This all-new book explains why cabooses existed, how they were used, and why they eventually disappeared. It will show and explain designs common to regions as well as designs specific to many individual railroads, closing with the common International-built wide-cupola caboose that appeared on railroads across the country.

Item as described and arrived on time. Good value. The book was wrapped tightly in a thin plastic shipping sleeve, but in transit, this was thin enough that it tore in some places to expose the book, but book still arrived in pretty good shape.

The item arrived quickly... it was new as described by the seller, however the photo showed it with a slipcover and it did not arrive with on. The seller was glad to accept a return and refund me the total. I would definitely do business with them again in the future.
