Reviews
"Piracy is an excellent, even 'sexy' topic. De Souza's work, particularly the chapters on Hellenistic and Roman piracy, touches on many of these subjects in an interesting and enlightening manner." BMR, Kathryn Simonsen, University of Alberta, "...a substantial contribution to the history of maritime marauding in the Mediterranean during the classical age." The American Neptune, "Philip de Souza's excellent new book on ancient piracy is mostly concerned with the impact of outlaw violence at the level of the private world." The International History Review, 'Any reader interested in the development of the Mediterranean political or economic landscape, the literature of entertainment which often featured pirate attacks, and a history of piracy based on texts of the ancient world will benefit greatly by reading this volume.' Cheryl Ward, Nautical Archaeology, ‘... it is pithy and to-the-point and should easily take its place as the standard work of reference in English and the launching pad for all further investigations.’James Davidson, Times Literary Supplement, "Philip de Souza, who is a senior lecturer in classical studies at St. Mary's University College in England, has done a splendid job of research and has succeeded in deciphering many of the mysteries about piracy in the ancient Mediterranean. It is a book written for classical scholars and the true pirate enthusiasts..." Bowling Green, KY News, ‘Any reader interested in the development of the Mediterranean political or economic landscape, the literature of entertainment which often featured pirate attacks, and a history of piracy based on texts of the ancient world will benefit greatly by reading this volume.’Cheryl Ward, Nautical Archaeology, '... it is pithy and to-the-point and should easily take its place as the standard work of reference in English and the launching pad for all further investigations.' James Davidson, Times Literary Supplement, "...no one until now has undertaken a careful analysis of the portrayal of piracy by contemporary writers...it is essential for anyone dealing with these periods of history." Synopsis
This book is an innovative historical study of piracy in the Graeco-Roman world from the Archaic period to Late Antiquity. It explores the conditions which allowed piracy to flourish in the ancient Mediterranean, especially the close relationship between warfare and piracy, and examines the impact which pirates had upon ancient society. Particular attention is paid to the numerous states and rulers who claimed to be actively suppressing piracy for the good of all. In many cases these claims turn out to be highly exaggerated ones, intended to enhance the prestige of those on whose behalf they were made. Surprisingly, in view of the prominence of pirates in many works of classical literature, this book is the first to offer detailed analysis of the portrayal of piracy by ancient writers, including Homer, Cicero and the ancient novels, taking account of the political, social and literary contexts which shaped their accounts., This book is an historical study of piracy in the ancient Greek and Roman world. It examines the origins and growth of piracy, the impact of piracy on trade, the relationship between warfare and piracy, and evaluates attempts to suppress piracy by the states and rulers of the ancient world., This book is an historical study of piracy in the ancient Greek and Roman world. It examines the origins and growth of piracy, the impact of piracy on trade, and the relationship between warfare and piracy, and evaluates attempts to suppress piracy by the states and rulers of the ancient world. A major innovation is the author's discussion of the way that pirates and piracy are portrayed in major works of classical literature, including Homer, Cicero and the ancient novels.
