Notes
Coalescing into swampy funk jams, Sometimes getting down and dirty, Sometimes swinging in the breeze, Sometimes cascading over rock... Or a deluge of soul, Rippling into R & B, but always Flowing south to it's blues source... Often by way of Saturn! If a band views local airplay on the area's blues and jazz shows as a sign of success, then what does it mean to be featured on the legendary King Biscuit Time radio show, the oldest running blues program? To April Iorio, lead singer for South Saturn Delta, it's like winning the Super Bowl. Iorio and her band, South Saturn Delta received that honor a month ago when they were interviewed and featured on the King Biscuit in preparation for their latest album, "Drink From the Well." It was Iorio's hot-smoke-and-honey vocals that first got the attention of the radio show, but it was the breadth of the band's material that reads like a recipe for American music gumbo; equal parts jazz, blues, soul, gospel and the spirit of New Orleans permeate their songs along with a dose of Hendrix added like Tabasco sauce. "Drink From the Well," the band's second album, features original songwriting along with a very special reinterpretation of Malvina Reynold's song 'God Bless The Grass.' "We recorded it as a tribute to her and folk legend Pete Seeger, who popularized the song in the 1960's" says Iorio. The album was recorded live in one open studio space with microphones suspended from the ceiling to get a sound that harkens back to the days of earlier blues recordings. South Saturn Delta's keyboardist, John Tiberi took full advantage of the studio's vintage Hammond B3 and baby grand piano, providing perfect balance between Iorio's classic blueslady vocals and guitarist Dave Fecca's gritty leads.
