The Garmin nuvi 1240 is designed to have simple navigation and on-the-go functionality. The nuvi 1240 has several preloaded maps from various places around the world. It can host up to 1,000 waypoints or favorites locations. Voice prompts include distance and street names for safe navigation while driving. This GPS receiver has traffic compatible tracking capabilities that offer alternative routes around traffic issues. The ecoRoute feature finds the most fuel-efficient route, while the Route Avoidance feature of the Garmin nuvi 1240 helps the user avoid specified highways, tolls, or other undesired locations. Voice-activated menu navigation enables the device to be totally handsfree. The nuvi 1240 has a speed limit indicator for most major roads to help avoid speeding tickets. The Where Am I feature has route point location for help locating key route points such as petrol stations, police stations, hospitals, and intersections. This GPS receiver is effective for walking routes as well as driving routes. Other features of the Garmin nuvi 1240 include currency and unit converters, a world clock, a calculator, and Garmin Lock to help prevent theft.
