Synopsis
Wherever Frederick Douglass went, large crowds gathered to hear him speak. His story was so hard to believe that people wanted to hear him tell it for themselves. How could someone who spoke so eloquently have been born into slavery? How could he have learned to write so well when it was illegal to teach slaves to read and write? And how did he escape from his life as a slave in Maryland and make his way to freedom in the North? The story of Douglass's life remains one of the most inspiring tales in American history. He was born a slave in rural Maryland and never had much of a family. He saw his mother only a few times before she died, and he never knew who his father was. But from the time he was old enough to know what it meant to be a slave, he was determined to be free. Book jacket.
