La storia dello schiavo è depositata nel manoscritto H. 6 che è stato redatto nel 1156 e ritrovato nella sinagoga di Ben Ezra al Cairo. Questa sinagoga è stata il più ricco archivio di testi arabo-ebraici. Con in mano soltanto il frammento di una lettera Ghosh si mette alla ricerca di un ignoto schiavo di cui non conosce neppure il nome, e che tuttavia gli appare come una chiave per intendere e raccontare i legami tra la sua India e l'Antico Egitto. Punti di partenza e centro della vicenda sono due piccoli villaggi egiziani di oggi. Nei vicoli di terra battuta, nelle amicizie con i loro abitanti, nel profondo rispetto reciproco e nelle differenze di usi e religioni l'autore cerca vecchi legami. Così le storie dell'antico schiavo e del ricercatore si intrecciano.
