Notes
Somewhere in the greater Nashville area resides the veteran master of the acoustic guitar and banjo known locally (on this planet) as Tom Smith. Yeah. Everybody around here plays a little guitar but, rest assured, nobody plays like Tom. You see, Tom doesn't play music in the conventional sense - chords and notes and such -no Tom plays in thoughts. Forget all the rest of that stuff, just listen to these magical compositions and follow the thought. Tom has taken to writing poetry and stories too. But perhaps a bit more about the music: Different people have different motivations for their music. James Burton, Santana, Paul McCartney, Buddy Holly, Michael Jackson, all had their individual motivations. Dylan, Lennon, Erik Satie, Miles Davis, Ralph Towner, John Fahey, Joan Baez, Todd Snider apparently have/had different motivations. Well, similar in that they wanted to communicate their own vision, but perhaps different in that they were willing to step a bit more out of, or into whatever box they perceive at the time. Similarly, guitarists have their own voices, be it Acoustic Guitar, Instrumental Guitar, Solo Guitar, Solo Banjo, or whatever they choose to call it, it is their own voice. For Phil Keggy, or Tuck Andres, Michael Hedges, Stan Lassiter, John McLouhlin, the guitar and the electronics make up one instrument called "the guitar", (actually for Tuck that extends to Patti, because the two of them do so well as "one instrument".) For other players, like Leo Kottke, or again John Fahey, Andy McKee, Andres Segovia, Christopher Parkening, the entire instrument is simply the guitar. Either way the magic is what is between them and their instrument. Some players want to render genres with perfection, some want the girls to dance, while others want to catch the beauties, the emotions of life in a fashion which takes their audience through the stories behind the feelings. There are as many motivations to playing music as there are musicians. That said, Tom Smith's motivation is the communication of stories, the conveyance of the emotions of living. He does it with his guitar, his banjo, his anecdotes and the spoken word pieces he has recently been doing at performances. He does it with a passion, honesty, and integrity some believe lost to this current era of virtual realities, and mass markets. He does it with heart. I think you will enjoy listening. Go to his website TomSmithGuitarist.com as well and read some of the things he has been developing as spoken word pieces.
