As a lifetime auto technician, and now professor I have seen long term damage from use of the T-taps leading to water intrusion. First thing I did was cut off the unused spade connectors, discard T-taps and reach for 16-14 sealed splice, joining new wire with existing on one side of the heat shrink butt connector. This takes a little more tools and experience.
