While ambitious, greedy, ruthless, and defiant, she also demonstrates signs of repentance, shame, sorrow, and melancholic woe. Stuart's complex character is further developed through a fictitious scene in which she confronts her ultimate nemesis, Elisabeth I, right before her untimely death.
