Synopsis
The Currents in Comparative Romantic Languages and Literatures series was founded in 1987, and actively solicits book-length manuscripts which treat aspects of romance languages and literatures. Originally established for works dealing with two or more romance literatures, the series has broadened its horizons and now includes studies on themes within a single literature or between different literatures, civilizations, art, music, film and social movements, as well as comparative linguistics., Galileo's astronomical and mechanical theories, and his subsequent trial for heresy, profoundly impacted the development of European science, philosophy, and theology, especially in seventeenth-century France, where it shaped the thought of some of its most important writers. France's long tradition of Gallican independence from Rome allowed Copernican and Galilean ideas to be discussed and promoted more freely than elsewhere. Placing those ideas in a national context, this book's individual chapters are devoted to tracing their development in the writings of Mersenne, Gassendi, Peiresc, and Descartes; similarly, resistance to Galilean ideas is traced through the writings of Froidmont, Morin, and the work of Cassini at the recently established Observatoire de Paris.

I was pleased with the entire purchase - the price of the book was very reasonable, the shipping was free, the book was delivered on time (important bc it was for my husband's birthday!), and my husband is looking forward to reading it. The book was in a thick plastic bag within the outside packaging, so it got to me unharmed. And it is at least as described - I think the condition is a bit better than "very good". I will visit Rock Top again soon!
