Formed in November of 2007, Scenic Byway started out as just some high school friends making music. Tyler Reese (Nevermind) got into hip-hop his sophomore year at Davis High. It was simple at first; just absorbing different emcees and collecting different preferences to what he chose to listen to. After a while, he would be at parties and would freestyle with friends when they noticed his uncanny knack for stringing words together, and to not only rhyme, but to also tell stories. Sometimes his quick delivery and immense vocabulary made people ask "What did you just say?" and he replied, "never mind," which led to his emcee title. He eventually bought a cheap RadioShack keyboard, and started making simple, yet well-done, hip-hop beats. With the combination of his songwriting and beat composing he recorded a couple of low-budget songs to let people know who Nevermind was. While Tyler was trying to make a name for himself, he found himself at several parties with people asking him to freestyle. At those parties, he would frequently see high school friend Nick Romer. Nick recognized Tyler's talent and insisted on making music together. Nick had played the trumpet since junior high and had a decent amount of experience playing in front of people, yet never really had any consistency with playing outside of school. Meanwhile, mutual friend Kiel Palmer had always wanted to play the drums and so one day, he saved his money and bought his 1st set. Drumming takes time and like every beginner, Kiel had his fair share of learning from his mistakes. He was persistent however, and kept on teaching himself the way that he wanted to. Once Kiel started getting more established as a drummer, him, Nick, and a few other buddies would have random, impromptu jam sessions in Kiel's Basement. While the three were separately working on music themselves, another Davis High student, David Richeson had no idea that he too, would be sharing the same goal. Dave was always heavily influenced by music and it was hip-hop that he felt the most connected with. His older brother had him listening to it while he was growing up and it became his obsession. He would refuse rides home from school as long as he had his CD player and headphones and would sometimes walk several miles to different places as long as the music was playing. Dave cherished hip-hop in the way that it was a voice for people that couldn't always be heard. After high school, he would be at those same parties and would be amazed to hear the quick-wit of his freestyling friends. Although he doubted himself at first, Dave embraced it and started joining in on the cyphers. As time passed, he grew more and more comfortable with his talent and started becoming good friends with Tyler. Dave would drive to Tyler's house 2-4 times a week just to hear the new beat that he had made. After a few beers, it would always turn into a very enjoyable flow session. Dave thought he should write his thoughts down, so one night in Lake Powell wrote his first hip-hop verse. It came so easily for him that he figured he was born with the talent to write and that it was in his genes. Genetics was born. At a school event at Salt Lake Community College, Tyler and Dave entered an open mic contest and each laid down their respective verses. With the 25 people present cheering afterward, Nick was kicking himself for not bringing his horn. It was decided to combine forces and make music as one. Nick had played a couple shows at the local bar, Monk's House of Jazz, and was asked to pick a date to play. He randomly chose and by coincidence he picked the same night that hip-hop heavyweights Sweatshop Union were scheduled to play. The four had a five-song set that they were prepared to play on the night. With nothing to call themselves, Dave remembered a road-sign turned into coffee table that said Scenic Byway.
